The Ugly Dragon

Let’s get right to it and call out the dragon that is on my heart today. He is called the Ugly Dragon. He’s the one that looks back in the mirror and tells you that you are not beautiful enough. He’s the one that says you are fat, too thin, too tall, or too short. The bald head upon your head makes you unworthy of being called a woman or a man. I hate this dragon. Christ says in scripture that we are to hate the evil in this world and my friends, this dragon is evil.
Psalm 97:10 Says “You who love the LORD, hate evil! He protects the lives of his godly people and rescues them from the power of the wicked.”

It pains me to see the men and women of this world have such discouragement of themselves. I heard the other day the famous singer Pink, giving a speech about her daughter at such a young age already thinking she was not as beautiful as her mother. Why? Because people are too busy comparing themselves to the others around them, rather than the beauty that is within them.

This is what I believe, what I have found in the last several years. Each person has been made in the image of God. The God of the universe, the maker of the stars. The God who created the sunrise and sunsets. The same God that created a school of dolphins playing in the ocean, and all the billions of planets and stars in the sky. The same God that created beaches with sand of glass and mountains covered in white snow. The beauty that is all around us was created by the same God that created you, and me. If that beauty is everywhere, can you imagine how much beauty God put inside of you?
Matthew 6:26 “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”
If you are much more valuable to our great God, then how can you doubt the level of beauty he instilled in you?
Can you imagine how impacted we could be if each of us knew exactly just how beautiful we are? See, beauty is intensely connected to our level of love. If we do not feel beautiful on the inside, we cannot love fully and adequately. Look at the girl you envy. The one with the large smile, the one always laughing. The one who acts like she does not care at all what others think. Look at how much she loves. I’d be willing to bet she’s able to love others more than you could ever believe yourself capable. That is partly because she knows just how beautiful she is. My personal belief is she knows how beautiful she is because she knows exactly who created her. The Lord. The one who made the universe and everything in it. The one who gave you life, the heart beating in your chest. He called you Beautiful long before you were born.
What’s crazy to me is to think about this: God knew exactly what you were going to look like before you were ever born. He knew your weight, He knew your height. He knew the struggles you’d have when your hair started turning grey. He knew the challenges you’d face in school with the girls who too, had beauty struggles, so they took out their hurt on you. God knew it all and he still chose to make you, exactly as you are. Even more, He continued and continues to call you beautiful. Nothing less. You will never ever be, anything less. You are B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L.
Here’s where the dragon comes in. The next time you go to the store and try on that pair of jeans that does not fit because they are too tight. The next time you wake up and notice the acne on your face. The next time you are standing in a crowd and you notice you are the thinnest one in the room. The dragon will speak, quietly, but profoundly. “Did you gain weight?” “Wow you are so short.” “All they see is the acne on your face, they don’t really see who you are.” These sly comments, so subtle, mean to create doubt, will then spiral into “You will never be enough. You are not Beautiful. You will never be like the others. You are not worthy of beauty.”
LIES!!!! The next time you look into a mirror, smile at yourself and simply say “DANG I LOOK AMAZING!” “I WAS CREATED BY THE GOD OF THE UNIVERSE. I AM MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN THE SUNSET!”
For me personally, I have struggled with acne for many years. I am 32 now and still have severe acne. It can be quite painful because of cysts, and when I wear make-up, it makes things worse. Most days I don’t honestly care about it. Most days I can honestly go out with the intention of letting my personality speak so loudly, that no one remembers my face, but rather who I am. That being said, some days I do have difficulty fighting the ugly dragon. I have to put on my shield and grab my sword and slay him down. I do that by reading scripture. Looking for the passages that remind me of just how important and special I am to God. The reason I was made, how amazing I am because my God is amazing. Once I have my reminder, I can go back to that mirror, slay that dragon dead in its path, get dressed and walk out the door with confidence. Each day is a different struggle. Each day I fight the ugly dragon.
My prayer for each of you reading this is simple, “Know that you are beautiful. But even more so, know WHY you are beautiful. God made you. He chose you. Just the way you are. EXACTLY the way that you are. Sure, we all need to be the best version of ourselves and I believe I can improve each day just a little. But God loves me now, while I’m changing. Why I’m growing. And He loves you too. You are Beautiful.”
So long Ugly Dragon, You are not welcome here.
